In the novel, the ship is just used very quickly as a landmark in relation to the timeline of events.
The Mayflower was the ship that transported the Pilgrim Fathers from England to the New World (America).
Thanks to this theme, we learnt about the story of Thanksgiving which is celebrated on the last Thursday of November. In the USA this is a bank holiday, that’s to say people do not work and students do not go to school or university.
This celebration began in 1621 in America when the English protestants arrived in the New World. They didn’t have anything to eat so the Inidans taught them to hunt turkeys, to fish and how to grow pumpkins. The English settlers were really thankful, so they organised a big meal for the Indians and that’s how Thanksgiving was born.
